What this tool does

Start from your own picture (a photo, a screenshot, a drawing) or from a plain colour or gradient background, and write the classic top and bottom captions in bold capital letters with a dark outline. Each caption sizes itself: the tool picks the largest font that fits its box on as few lines as possible, so a short punchline is big and a long one wraps neatly. Add more captions and emoji stickers, drag them anywhere, resize them from the corner, rotate them with the round handle, and save the result as PNG or JPG. Everything is drawn in your browser; the picture is never uploaded.

There are no built-in meme pictures on purpose: famous meme images belong to their photographers and subjects. Use your own pictures, or one of the plain backgrounds for text-only memes.

How the captions are drawn

  • The font is Impact where your device has it (Windows and macOS do), falling back to the heaviest common sans-serif fonts elsewhere. No font is downloaded, so the result can look slightly different on a phone without Impact; the outline keeps it readable either way.
  • The outline is drawn first and the letters on top, with rounded joins, so the dark edge sits outside the letters and does not eat into them. Its thickness is a share of the font size (12% by default), so it scales with the text. Set it to 0 for plain text.
  • Fitting: for each size, the words are wrapped into the box; the tool keeps the largest size where every word fits whole and all lines fit the height, found by bisection. Words are only broken in the middle as a last resort.
  • Safe margins: the top and bottom captions start 4% of the shorter side away from the edges, because feeds round corners and crop edges. The article on meme layout explains the numbers.

Steps

  1. Choose a picture, or pick a background colour or gradient and a shape (square, 4:5, 16:9 or 9:16 story).
  2. Type the top and bottom text. Add more text or emoji with the buttons.
  3. Click a caption or sticker to select it: drag to move, the corner square to resize, the round handle to rotate. In the panel you can change its colours, outline, alignment, capitals and rotation.
  4. Choose PNG (sharpest text) or JPG (smaller for photos) and download.

Keyboard

Every caption and sticker can be focused with Tab. Arrow keys move it by 1% (Shift for 5%), [ and ] rotate by 5°, + and − resize, Delete removes it. The handles are a shortcut for pointer users; everything they do is also available from the keyboard or the panel.

Tips

  • Short captions read best: two to six words on top, the punchline at the bottom.
  • White text with a black outline works on almost any photo. On a light plain background use dark text with a light outline.
  • Pictures are saved at their own size up to 2,048 pixels on the longest side, which is more than any social network shows.
  • To crop the picture first, use the image crop tool; to add a watermark or your handle, the image watermark tool.

Frequently asked questions

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The meme is drawn on a canvas in your browser and saved directly from it.

Why does the text look different on my phone?

The tool uses fonts already on your device. Impact is on Windows and macOS; on phones without it a heavy fallback font is used. The outline and sizing work the same.

Are there popular meme templates?

Not built in, on purpose: those pictures are owned by others. Upload a picture you have the right to use, or start from a plain colour or gradient.

How do I make the text smaller or larger?

Text sizes itself to its box. Drag the corner handle or use the box width slider to make the box larger or smaller, and the text follows.

Can I rotate a caption?

Yes. Drag the round handle above it, use the rotation slider, or press [ and ] with the caption focused. It snaps to straight angles within 4°.
